Given the huge cost involved in new build of offshore vessels, earlier generation jack-up oil drilling rigs, no longer used for that purpose offer a comparatively economic avenue for the offshore wind industry. Available in various configurations, and built for operations in waters ranging from 80' to 800', there basic stable base and physics offers the industry a proven resource for stable a...

I saw a great new way of getting lots of green energy by using Kites on TED.com. Placing Kites at about 300 meters in the air could generate tremendous new way of getting offshore wind energy cheap. Low cost, high impact.
Take a look at this presentation by innovator and invento Saul Griffith on http://blog.ted.com/2009/03/inventing_a_sup.php

The transport of energy from the nacelle to the base will be done using a closed-loop
system of pumps and pipelines. This way the heavy generator in the nacelle can be removed. As a result installation, maintanance, etc. will become easier.
